2012-2013 Class Schedule
Susque's homeschooling classes provide an excellent break from the daily routine of study at the home. They offer a chance to get out into God's creation, into his classroom. They are the perfect addition to your ministry at home. All classes are taught from a Christian perspective, by qualified teachers who care about children and seek to inspire them to learn and discover God's truth.

Payment Policy:
Upon Registration, a non-refundable deposit of 50% of the total class costs is required. Registrations will not be processed without this deposit.
Cancellation Policy:
In the event that Camp Susque cancels a program or class, parents will be contacted 24 hours in advance and a full refund will be issued.
If you have children who are not participating in the program, a playground and hiking trails are available for you yo use. Parental supervision is required. There are also local attractions available within close proximity to the camp. Of course, we always welcome volunteers to do a service project while waiting for their child to be dismissed form class.

Course Description: Miss Heather will be teaching this lab in her cycle of high school level science classes. The hands-on labs will include an in-depth dissection of a frog, a fetal pig, and a cow’s eye (very cool!) as well as physiological studies of living creatures like mice and fish. This class is for high school students and there are no prerequisites.

Chief Bill’s literature class for the year is myths and legends. The fall semester will focus on creation and flood myths from around the world. Students will study these myths and the gods and goddesses of ancient civilizations as they detect common themes, worldview elements, and their impact on Western culture. Additionally, students will compare and contrast elements with Biblical accounts of creation and the flood and will be able to articulate why the Bible provides an accurate description. Students will also read Darwinian descriptions of creation and J.R.R. Tolkien’s creation myths to trace elements of mythology. Assignments include two papers, a god/goddess comparison chart, and map work.

This class can be counted as either a credit for science or health! Students will be responsible to accomplish one chapter each week. Class time will be used for discussion, making recipes, projects and quizzes (as needed).
This spring students will continue to examine responses and answers to the questions skeptics raise about Christianity. We will continue using the sessions from Timothy Keller’s book The Reason for God as the outline for the course discussion supplementing that with extra readings and class notes.

This class will swim through rivers and streams, oceans and seas to discover all the creatures of the 5th day of creation. Class time will be full of experiments, projects, and review. We will dissect a crayfish, cover our hands with blubber (Vaseline) to see how effective it is against cold, and more.

This class will focus on learning basic ASL vocabulary, including the alphabet, numbers and beginning vocabulary signs. It will also focus on learning about deaf culture and how ASL differs from other types of signed languages and from spoken English.

You can sign for individual classes or the entire year
Take a leisurely hike once a month to see and document the birds, trees, and seasonal changes that take place throughout Susque’s forests, mountains, and streams. Follow program staff as they help participants identify birdsongs, winter bark, animal tracks, and much more. Bring a good pair of hiking boots, binoculars, any guide books you have, and a journal! Class is open to all ages. Time will be provided during each walk to explore and document your own corner of camp.

Tornados, hurricanes, and hail, oh my! This class will delve into the basics of atmospheric phenomenon and how it affects our daily lives. Students will keep a weather journal for the length of the class. Using the data they collect, they will learn to predict key weather patterns. We will also touch upon micro (local) and macro (global) conditions that modify the weather. Students are required to keep a weather journal (any notebook with enough pages for 3 months of observations works).

Our Safety Day is a tradition for many families as they join us to kick off the new school year. Come, join us for our annual day of fun, fellowship and exciting programs designed to meet your fire safety requirements. All proceeds from the day will go to the Trout Run Volunteer Fire Company. In addition to the important program put on by our local fire company, it is a great time for meeting new friends, fellowshipping with old ones, and encouraging new homeschooling families.

Kids love animals! In this Susque original course (number three in our popular Sense Nature series), students will learn about various types of animals, their habitats and niches. This is a hands-on, activity-filled class. Students will be encouraged to think creatively and “build” a habitat for a specific animal, see if they can guess what animal lives in what environment, as well as other “funcational” activities. Hand outs for follow up at home will be provided. Come prepared to be outside for most of the class (please wear sturdy shoes and bring a coat). Parents are free for this course.

In this day and age of GPS and Tom Tom, is there anyone out there who still knows how to read a map and use a compass? We do, and we want you to know, too! Learn how to read maps including road maps, topographic maps and grid maps and then use your skills on our own course with a genuine compass.

Our popular discovery series for younger students begins its cycle over this year. It explores the wonders of God’s creation using all of the senses that God has given us. Camp Susque is pleased to offer the convenience of local standardized testing at an affordable price. Beginning at 9:30, Heather Klees will proctor the California Achievement Test for students in grades 3, 5, and 8 (other grades are optional). If you have a child in one of these grades, consider having us administer the test. We will mail the completed test to be graded and the results will be mailed directly to you. Test covers Reading, Language Arts, and Mathematics.

Students will GET WET in this popular class. Students will explore Susque’s ponds, streams, and wet lands looking for critters and learning about water quality. Topics include aquatic eco-systems, water testing through a hands on lab, and wading in the Lycoming Creek looking for various aquatic life. Bring a change of clothes and a pair of water shoes (required for going into the creek).

Join with area Christian schools for a day of celebrating God and His creation. Each year, our Earth Day celebration focuses on a different aspect of God’s creation. The theme for this year will be announced as we get close to the day. Along with the theme, families and students will then get to choose two classic Susque classes such as Nature Hikes, Stream Studies, and Habitat Studies. Bring a bag lunch and come enjoy the day.
