School of Discovery Class Schedule
Spring 2012 Class Schedule
Susque's homeschooling classes provide an excellent break from the daily routine of study at the home. They offer a chance to get out into God's creation, into his classroom. They are the perfect addition to your ministry at home. All classes are taught from a Christian perspective, by qualified teachers who care about children and seek to inspire them to learn and discover God's truth. Course Description: This course will cover the text of The Mystery of History vol. 1. It is meant to be a yearlong course with homework assigned. A syllabus will be sent out in August for those signing up to take the class. It will be up to the parent as to how many projects are completed, as the class time will be geared toward a varied age group. Therefore, if you have a younger child, fewer projects would be expected as opposed to an older child. If the parent desires, I will take completed assignments and grade them. However, this also is up to the parent. Many people prefer to keep their own records. Our classroom time will be a mixture of discussion, projects, mapping (including salt dough and cake maps), and other activities.
Required Materials:
Mystery of History vol. 1 (1st or 2nd edition)
Suggested Materials:
- The Golden Goblet by Eloise Jarvis McGraw
- Mara, Daughter of the Nile by Eloise Jarvis McGraw
- Handbook of Today’s Religions by Josh McDowell & Don Stewart
- God King The Bronze Bow by Speare

Not necessary to have taken fall semester to sign up for spring.
Are you ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you? Do you know how to answer basic objections to the Christian faith that friends or family may present to you?
This spring students will continue to examine responses and answers to the questions skeptics raise about Christianity. We will continue using the sessions from Timothy Keller’s book The Reason for God as the outline for the course discussion supplementing that with extra readings and class notes.
Additional sessions will include a look at ways to “prove” the existence of God, dialoging with a non Christian, and a practicum where all the material will be put together in a series of case studies designed to review and apply the material from the year in a fun and yet challenging way.
A paper will be assigned at the beginning of the semester where students will pick one of the previously discussed sessions and write a paper in what is known as “philosophical dialog” (a style of writing common to Greek scholarship and Medieval Christianity). This paper can be extended to cover requirements for various diploma programs. The practicum will consist of mini-case studies where students, working in small groups, will respond to objections posed by non Christians.
February 2 – The problem of pain – Why is there so much evil in the world? (Keller, ch. 2)
February 16 – The problem of the past – Why is the church responsible for so much injustice (Keller, ch. 4)
March 1 – The problem of people—How can God send good people to hell? (Keller, ch. 5)
March 15 – The problem of persistence—Do we really believe this stuff? (Keller, chs. 11, epilogue)
March 29 – Can we Prove God Exists? (ch. 8-9)
April 12 – Dialoging with the non Christian —Putting it all into practice

Miss Heather will be using Apologia's popular text by Jay Wile to lead students through basic chemistry. The class will contain instruction time and lab experiments. Students do not need to use Wile's book to take this class. The only prerequisite is that students need to have taken or are currently studying Algebra One. It is not a requirement for students to have taken the Fall classes to take the Spring classes.
Jan 19th-- Atomic Structure Lab (Mods 8 & 9) -- Students will learn about the shape of an atom and test that with Skittles candies (yum!) and study the behavior of atoms and Polar vs. Covalent compounds
Feb 2nd—Acid/Base Chemistry (Mod 10) Using naturally found chemicals, students will learn how to do a titration—cool colors and terrible smells await!
Feb 16th--- Solubility Lab (Mod 11)— Bringing back the Bunsen burners and safety goggles to determine how temperature affects the solubility rates of solids, liquids and gases.
March 1st—Gas Laws ( Mod 12)- More stinky natural chemicals as students use their past titration knowledge to determine the amount of acid in vinegar.
March 15th – Thermodynamics is fun! (Mod 13)—Students will construct calorimeters to determine the amount of heat produced in a chemical reaction.
March 29th Kinetics Lab (Mod 14)— Can we speed up chemical reactions by adding anything to the equation? Oh yeah- come learn all about catalysts!
April 12th Equilibrium and Red/Ox reactions (Mods 15& 16) - In this final lab we will do experiments involving equilibrium plus students will learn how to make a battery.

Model rockets aren’t just fun, they are very educational as you discover several important scientific principles that God uses to keep order in His creation. Use different techniques to learn about Newton’s Laws of Motion. Build your own model rocket to launch and use bottle rockets to try different experiments. Plenty of hands on learning and handouts make this a great learning activity.

If you have taken Susque’s popular Stream Studies course then you know what lives in the waters at Camp Susque. With this course you have the opportunity to learn what lives in a drop of water, in the dirt or in a rotting log. Microhabitat Studies explores the unseen world and the tiny micro-organisms that are vital to the eco-system. Students will obviously learn how to use microscopes plus an invertebrate key as they discover another fascinating aspect of our Father’s world.

Kids love animals! In this Susque original course (number three in our popular Sense Nature series), students will learn about various types of animals, their habitats and niches. This is a hands-on, activity-filled class. Students will be encouraged to think creatively and “build” a habitat for a specific animal, see if they can guess what animal lives in what environment, as well as other “funcational” activities. Hand outs for follow up at home will be provided. Come prepared to be outside for most of the class (please wear sturdy shoes and bring a coat). Parents are free for this course.
